Timeline ‍8 Weeks ‍ ‍

a project designed to make the effects of humans on ecosystems tangible, introducing Te Ao Maori principles such as kaitiakitanga, whakapapa and loss, fostering stronger connections to nature.

In Auckland, many urban residents feel disconnected from the natural environment and are unaware of their impact on fragile ecosystems.

we created an immersive installation designed to make the effects of humans on ecosystems tangible, while introducing Te Ao Maori principles and fostering stronger connections to nature.

Process

I focused on finding meaningful ways to integrate kaitiakitanga and whakapapa into the design. By experimenting with Māori patterns and incorporating visuals from the installation, I created a series of posters and a billboard that reflect the themes, tone, and cultural significance we aimed to convey.

To enhance the immersive atmosphere of the posters, I animated them in After Effects using layered ambient forest sounds, floating particles, and subtle text transitions that fade in and out throughout the composition.

Outcome

The experience was designed to extend beyond the space through shareable moments and a dedicated Instagram presence.

This helps amplify the project’s emotional impact while encouraging continued engagement and awareness online.

Tiakina is an immersive installation that raises awareness of the impact humans have on Aotearoa’s fragile ecosystems. The installation is supported by a series of posters, a billboard, and social media content designed to build intrigue, generate interest, and encourage the public to attend.

The visual direction was designed to feel immersive and engaging, encouraging the audience to feel drawn into the installation. Through the use of imagery, motion, and atmosphere.
